3G to enter widespread testing
Beginning at the end of this month, China's TD-SCDMA network will enter large-scale testing, the Beijing Times reports. The testing will be focused on 3G handsets in order to improve the stability and compatibility of domestically-manufactured phones. The TD-SCDMA alliance said that this test, at up to 10,000 handsets, would be larger than any previously conducted, and would include China Mobile, China Telecom, and China Netcom as participants. Datang, ZTE, and TD Tech will be responsible for the bases and systems equipment. The test would also differ from the two previous tests in that it would move out to five smaller cities in addition to Shanghai and Beijing.Separately, Xinhua reports that 3G networks will not damage the "Little Smart" PHS-based city wireless networks that have arisen as competitors to GSM in China's urban areas. A representative of the Ministry of Information Industry said on the 19th that not only were the two networks aimed at different markets, but that the development of 3G would work to bring technological improvements to existing PHS networks. By the end of 2005, China had 85 million Little Smart subscribers; this number is expected to reach 100 million by the end of the year.Link: http://bjt.net.cn/news.asp?newsid=138369http://economy.thebeijingnews.com/0392/2006/0220/012@161627.htm
