June 28 – China's coal production amounted to the equivalent of 1.96 billion tons of oil in 2011, making it the world's largest producer of the resource, according to a report issued by BP. Meanwhile, the US, the world's second largest coal producer, turned out 556 million tons during the same period, the report added. China was also the world's largest coal consumer last year, using the equivalent of 1.84 billion tons of oil.

Natural gas consumption was up 12.9% year on year to 11.3 billion m3 in May and was up 15.9% to 61.3 billion m3 in the first five months.
