August 9 – China's top three alumina maker, including Aluminum Corp of China Ltd (NYSE: ACH, SHA: 601600, HKG: 2600), are planning to invest a total of $1 billion developing quarries and building smelters in Indonesia to secure stable supply of raw aluminum. About 80% of China's 25.42 million tons of bauxite imports came from Indonesia in 1H 2012.

August 7 – China produced 177 tons of gold in 1H 2012, up 7.7% from 1H 2011, the Ministry of Industry and Information Technology said. Output from the gold industry expanded 18.2% year on year to ¥141.23 billion during the six-month period.

August 7 – China's crude steel output was 60.98 million tons in July, down 2% from the previous month, the first monthly decline in 31 years, the China Iron and Steel Association predicted. China is responsible for half of global output. The projection may reverse increase in imports of coking coal and iron ore, which are used to make steel.

August 3 – China imported 59.4% of its oil needs in 1H 2012, up 2.1 percentage points from the end of 2011, according to the China Petroleum and Chemical Industry Association. The nation imported more than 140 million tons of crude oil in 1H 2012, up 11% from 1H 2011.
