August 17 – China's demand for gold declined 7% year on year to 144.9 tons in Q2 2012, prompting global gold demand to hit the lowest level in more than two years, the World Gold Council said. The price of the precious metal gained 7% to $1,609 on average during the same period.

August 15 – The National Development and Reform Commission cut coal output goals in Inner Mongolia, Shanxi and Shaanxi provinces and capped this year's nationwide output at 3.65 billion tons in a move to prevent coal prices from falling. A previous goal set by the NDRC puts annual coal output at 3.9 billion tons by 2015.

August 14 – China's cotton imports totaled 406,000 tons in July and 3.46 million tons between January and July, up 158% and 133% respectively from the corresponding periods of last year, according to China National Cotton Reserves Co.
