Eight more cities are expected to impose curbs on new vehicle purchases, the China Association of Automobile Manufacturers warned, adding that this would slash vehicle sales by 400,000 this year, or 2% of annual sales.

Four Chinese cities including Beijing and Shanghai already have such restrictions to ease air pollution and congestion. Tianjin, Shenzhen, Hangzhou, Chengdu, Shijiazhuang, Chongqing and Qingdao are among the eight new cities to introduce the curbs, according to the association.

Vehicle sales in China totaled 1,754,100 units in June, down 0.4% from a month earlier and up 11.2% from a year earlier, the association said. The month on month growth was slower than in May's 4.4% decline, while the year on year increase was faster than May's 9.8% rise.
