China: the next clean development mechanism market

According to China’s State Development and Reform Commission (SDRC), the country currently has 235 ongoing clean development mechanism (CDM) projects, which involved with 600 million tones reduction of carbon emission and 350 million US dollars in trade volume. Statistics from the World Bank also showed that by the end of September 2006, Asia’s CDM market accounted for 84% of the market’s total volume, among which 60% of transactions involved China. The country’s energy-saving objectives, soaring energy demand, and planned promotion of renewable energy create a strong potential for the CDM market.
