China to redefine terms of health insurance for major diseases
Insurance Association of China plans to redefine terms and conditions of health insurance for major diseases to solve the contradictions in existing insurance policies and increase professionalism, Market Daily reported.
The responsible committee under the association said that 26 major diseases are defined on preliminary basis, and according to compensation principles of the industry, 7 to 10 major diseases are defined as core diseases that this type of health insurance should cover.
What triggered off the defining process is the conflict over what kind of major diseases and whether they are entitled to compensation under such health insurance policy. The differences in opinions or even misunderstandings are resulted from lack of professionalism in the drafting of terms and conditions, misleading of sales people, wrong expectations of policy bearers and above all, the legal definition of the terms and conditions. The industry believes that the reform on health insurance for major diseases can also re-establish the reputation of life insurance offered.
Under the supervision of the association, the committee is composed of medical experts from 10 life insurance companies and 4 reinsurance companies to redefine the standards with reference to the industries in England and Singapore.
The 26 preliminary definitions of major diseases are already drafted, among which include 8 core diseases as acute myocardial infarction, serious brain stroke, malignant tumor, heart surgery, significant organ transplant, chronic renal failure plus uremia, serious burn and paralysis. Experts said that these 8 core diseases that are made compulsory in health insurance for major diseases policy can help prevent insurance companies to cover these diseases of high occurrence.
The committee said that the next step is to consult medical experts outside insurance industry. The major mission is to build an archive of major diseases definitions for insurance, providing unified standards across the country and preventing careless unprofessional definition of individual companies. Brochure on health insurance for major diseases also need to be drafted to inform both consumers and insurance sales people the necessary knowledge towards policy coverage as well as terms and conditions.
