Ericsson to buy Chinese data company
China
Business Daily reports that Ericsson, which
acquired Marconi in October, may have its sights set on either UTStarcom or
Harbor Networks. Ericsson president and CEO Carl-Henric Svanberg, speaking in Guangzhou on Saturday,
revealed the company's plan to buy into the Chinese market, but did not mention
a specific target. Both Harbor and UTStarcom would give Ericsson the
capabilities it needs in the area of data networking; while its Marconi
purchase supplemented its weakness in this area, it still needs to buttress its
data networking services in the China
market. UTStarcom is reportedly looking for foreign partners, says an insider,
and rumors have linked Harbor with Siemens.
