Since Heinz's former China head Charles Chyi resigned last year due to a heart condition, his replacement Don Gadsden, who arrived in October, finally made an appearance yesterday, China Business News reports. He answered reporters' questions concerning the effect last year's Sudan I scare had on the company; only 1% of sales had anything to do with the carcinogenic coloring agent, and sales have completely recovered. Gadsden also spoke concerning its use of tomatoes in China. According to Heinz, one of the world's largest commercial users of tomatoes, though China has a large area of land devoted to growing tomatoes, their quality and yield are not very high. From this year forward, Heinz's experimental tomato fields in China will produce 30,000 tons, and China will become an important source of raw materials for the Asian region. But Heinz's largest operations in China are baby food, seasonings, and frozen foods. In 2005, its sales in China topped 1 billion yuan; Gadsden said that maintaining the company's fast pace of growth is one of the largest pressures he faces.Link: http://dycj.ynet.com/article.jsp?oid=7800184
