Ikea to open in Beijing, Chongqing
Ikea
will open its second-largest location worldwide in Beijing in April,
and plans to have 10 locations in China by 2010, The Beijing News
reports. The new location, with an area of 44,000 square meters, will
be 10,000 square meters larger than Ikea's newest store in Shanghai,
and will carry 8500 products, 3000 more than its current Beijing
store. The company has plans to open a store in Chongqing this year.
It
has also been taking steps to cut prices and eliminate its image as a
high-priced retailer. Ikea plans to increase the proportion of goods
it purchases from China to 50% within five years. China is already
Ikea's largest supplier; 30% of Ikea's goods carry a made in China
label.
