Internet users reach 162m, fuel media growth

The number of internet users in China jumped 25 million, or 31.7%, to 162 million between January and the end of June, cementing the country as the world's second largest internet community behind the US, which has 211 million netizens, the Shanghai Daily reported. Growth in the first six months of this year nearly matched that for the whole of 2006. 44.3 million people use cellphones to go online and the number of broadband users has reached 122 million.
