Net Notes: A US$17b throat lozenge

SA editor Judy Well rounds up the global impact of the US subprime crisis on Seeking Alpha. She cites an AFP report in which People’s Bank of China chief Zhou Xiaochuan claims China largely survived the fiasco. “The negative impact of the US subprime crisis on the domestic economy seems so far smaller than originally expected,” he said.

Interfax-China reports via Seeking Alpha that Research In Motion (RIM), the manufacturer of BlackBerry smartphones, hopes to launch a new BlackBerry model in China by the end of October.

The Asia Times carries a story arguing that Germany's decision to introduce controls on investments by sovereign wealth funds, including China’s, is a victory for European protectionists over globalization.

Nobel Prize winning economist Eric Maskin thinks the Chinese government needs to use incentive schemes to get companies to reduce greenhouse gas emissions. Caijing magazine also reports that an A-share listing is expected for NYSE Euronext, the world’s largest bourse, and that no end is in sight for the ongoing Wahaha-Danone brouhaha.

China Challenges Blog links to a Bloomberg column by Andy Mukherjee in which the author argues that a one-off revaluation of the Chinese currency will help China combat inflation. He cites Peking University professor of finance Michael Pettis, who writes in his China financial markets blog that the current regime of rapid appreciation is counterproductive because it encourages hot money flows.

China Digital Times features an AFP report that US presidential hopefuls Hilary Clinton and Barack Obama are trying to out-do each other on being tough on China. It is not certain what Baidu makes of Obama’s inflammatory stance.

Slate magazine carries a three-part series on Fujian immigration to the US.

Britain’s Guardian reports on China’s US$17 billion plan to tackle smog ahead of the Beijing Olympics. The plan includes factory closures and a ban on new construction.
