Surge in retail spending due to inflation not demand: Economist

An 18.8% year-on-year gain in China’s retail sales to US$109.87 billion (RMB810.5 billion) last month, the fastest monthly gain since 1999, was boosted by inflation rather than increasing demand, Stephen Green, a senior economist with Standard Chartered Bank China, told the Oriental Morning Post.
