China will allow futures brokers to trade overseas and establish investment funds to spur development of its capital markets and unlock more of the nation's 15.4 trillion yuan, or $1.9 trillion, of household savings, Bloomberg news reports.

China’s Central Bank announced on Tuesday that China bank sector is opened to brokerage firms which are allowed to do business on the inter-bank bond market and inter-bank loan market, Xinhua news reports.

With the booming stock market and the reforms on brokerage business, Shanghai-based Orient Securities, China's eighth biggest broker by total assets, on Monday reported a net profit of 551 million yuan (HK$536.8 million) for the first six months, versus a loss of 27 million yuan a year earlier and a loss of 296 million yuan for the whole of 2005, reports The Standard.

Chinese law spells out rules for the operation of securities firms, but it is less clear on what happens when a firm runs into financial difficulty. What happens to Chinese securities firms when they go under? China Southern Securities, Hantang Securities, China Eagle Securities, Asia Securities, Min'an Securities, Wuhan Securities, and Northern Securities have all entered bankruptcy liquidation in the past few years, but few of them have completed the process, reports 21st Century Business Herald.

Brokerage firms are the intermediary between buyers and sellers of stocks and securities. Securities sector in China has recently undergoing several reforms to open itself for foreign investment. Mainland brokers are also allowed to trade on overseas stock. At the present stage, international giants such as UBS, Morgan Stanley, HSBC and AIA have already established joint fund management firms in the Mainland. Although most of them do not have more than 49 percent stakes in the joint ventures, they have major control over operation, investment and management of the Mainland companies.
