As one of the two mobile phone operators in China, China Unicom Limited engages in cellular business in 30 provinces, municipalities and autonomous regions in China. It has a global system for mobile, GSM, communications and CDMA. It is also a provder of international and domestic long-distance calls, data and Internet services, and other related telecommunication value-added businesses. China Unicom has constructed a broadband optical fiber transmission network in the Mainland as a shared platform that supports the operations of cellular business, international and domestic long-distance calls, data and Internet. In the first quarter of 2006, China Unicom had revenues rose 10 percent to 22.9 billion yuan and net income rose 31 percent to 1.39 billion yuan, boosted by higher sales from its GSM business and increased income from the CDMA business. Together with China Mobile, China Unicom is a major competitor for the expected 3G license.
