Avery Dennison Corp – the world’s largest label maker – said it will spend US$10 million building a specialty tape factory in Kunshan, Jiangsu province, the Nanjing-based Yangzi Waobao reported. The 6,500 square meter factory, which will employ 135 people, will manufacture pressure-sensitive tape for industrial and personal purposes. Kevin Young, vice president and general manager of the new factory, said half of the new factory’s production will be sold in China, and the rest will be exported to other Asian countries. Last week, Avery Dennison acquired Paxar Corp for US$1.34 billion to integrate emerging markets like China and India. Paxar has two production bases in China employing around 5,000 people. China consumed 10% of the firm’s global sales in 2006, worth US$5.6 billion.

China Mobile is planning a domestic IPO as early as next month, the Oriental Morning Post reported today. The world’s largest mobile phone company by users could raise as much as RMB80 billion through a mainland offering, surpassing the record IPO of the Industrial and Commercial Bank of China with its IPO. Its Hong Kong shares closed up on the news Tuesday at a record HK$80.35. China’s securities regulator has encouraged mainland companies listed offshore to go public on mainland bourses.

The Ministry of Information has given the go-ahead for an industrial park to be built in Xinzhuang, Shanghai, the 21st Century Business Herald reported. The Xizhuang Industrial Park will attract US$6 billion in investment and accommodate display components suppliers and buyers such as TV and laptop producers, establishing Shanghai as China’s number one production base for flat panel displays. Shanghai was one of the earliest cities in China to manufacture flat panel displays. In October 2005, NEC (Shanghai) started mass producing 15-inch displays, and these currently represent 25% of the global market. China made over 150,000 flat panel displays in 2006 and the figure for 2007 is projected to exceed 200,000.
